2004
Het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek werd op 3 januari 2004 een ZBO onder de Wet op het Centraal bureau voor de statistiek. Het CBS zelf is in 1899 als dienst ingesteld; de directeur-generaal is sindsdien het bestuursorgaan dat de statistieken vaststelt.

Het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS) verzamelt, bewerkt en publiceert officiële statistieken over de Nederlandse samenleving en economie. Het CBS voert Europese statistische verplichtingen uit, beheert kernindicatoren zoals CPI, BBP en werkloosheid en levert microdata aan wetenschap en beleid. Het bureau heeft vestigingen in Den Haag en Heerlen en werkt strikt onafhankelijk van politiek op basis van de Wet op het CBS.
