De Nederlandse Publieke Omroep werd in zijn huidige vorm ingesteld in de gewijzigde Mediawet 2008, met een sturingsmodel dat op 1 januari 2014 in werking trad. De NPO is opvolger van de Publieke Omroep/NOS-bestuur en coördineert de landelijke publieke omroepen.

De Nederlandse Publieke Omroep (NPO) is het sturingsorgaan van de landelijke publieke omroep en coördineert de programmering, financiering en strategie van de omroeporganisaties. De NPO beheert onder meer NPO 1, 2 en 3, Radio 1 tot en met 5, NPO Start en NPO Plus en bewaakt het publieke media-aanbod conform de Mediawet. Het budget uit de Rijksmediabijdrage bedraagt circa 900 miljoen euro per jaar.
